[Exhibition] ARTE sponsors the 2014 Seoul Photo Festival

Photographs have power to bring us back in to the point of the photo taken for a little while. There are stories and memories in the photo taken. There was an event to meet Seoul history and the memories. ‘2014 Seoul Photo Festival’ Enabled us to see how Seoul has changed over time at a glance. Hankuk Paper ARTE was also seen in this event. The ‘2014 Seoul Photo Festival’ was held for a month starting on November 13th which enables us to go back in time to see the city changes. The theme of the event was ‘Seoul City, birth of a place: Hanseong, Gyeongseong, Seoul’. The purpose was to look back in time from 1876 starting with Hanseong, Gyeongseong and until the current city, Seoul on how the city has changed over time.

In this event, it allows you to see at a glance how the ‘Hansung’ from Chosun Dynasty for 500years changed to ‘Gyeongseong’, the Japanese colonial era, the damage made during Korean war, and finally how Seoul was rebuilt after. The photos are from the National Archives of Korea and over 700 photos gathered from the citizens to enable the city changes at a glance.

Although a photograph is just a piece of paper, it brings us great inspiration through time and transforms into a memory and history. Especially in this event, the Hankuk Paper’s sentimental art paper, ARTE has been used as the representing paper and also used as a poster.

The keyword that goes through this photo festival was 'space'. This was the third theme of Seoul's memories (2012), people (2013), and space (2014), all of which are in progress as part of a trilogy from 2012 to establish the festival's identity. Particularly, this event featured the stage spreading to Seodaemun Independence Park which is an outdoor park, and it was held all over Seoul including the Seoul Museum of History, the Citizen's Office in the Seoul City Government Office, the public and private art galleries in Seoul and 21 galleries.

Photographs leave memories. It brings us back to when the photo was taken. So, this '2014 Seoul Photography Festival' seemed to throw a silent message to us living in present through the change of Seoul and memories of the past. It was a festival scene full of emotions like ARTE.

It was a great time to fall into our memories, into memories of Seoul for a while. At the moment when we talk about the present, it becomes the past and the history. I do not doubt that our present moment will also be a beautiful memory of tomorrow.
